Astrologically speaking, Pluto is probably the planet that scares people the most.
It IS named after the God Of Hell, after all. And when people think of Pluto they associate it with bad shit happening. And not just normal, run of the mill bad shit … but catastrophic bad shit like death, or serious illness or emotional betrayal by someone we deeply trust. It definitely can be connected with traumas of all kinds.
But what Pluto is here to teach us is that yes… bad, painful, scary, overwhelming, dreadful things happen. For better or worse, it’s part of what it means to be alive in a human body on this planet.
But Pluto doesn’t cause the bad things. Pluto gives us a playbook for how to deal with the bad things when they inevitably DO happen. Pluto is primarily interested in our psychological responses to those traumas. To loss. To heartbreak. To disaster. To tragedy. To horror.
And gives us the tools to navigate those seasons of loss and devastation.
What is true for most humans is that when we experience something that feels like a nightmare, a shut-down-and-go-numb protective mechanism kicks in. Now, of course numbness and shutdown as an initial response to something unbearable and extreme is perfectly normal. But it becomes problematic when it becomes a permanent emotional state and way of life.
When we experience an overwhelming loss of love, or health, home or identity, where we go numb is around is our feelings. The feelings of grief or fear or rage or despair associated with these losses can be so incredibly intense that we close the door on them and relegate them to the shadow realms of the unconscious. Where they live disconnected from the rest of your psyche.
The psychological term for this process is repression and it takes a LOT of energy to repress these powerful emotions. Which means that the energy going towards repression is no longer available for other things. Like creating a meaningful and purposeful response to the loss the person has experienced.
This is where Pluto comes in. Plutonian wisdom says that in order to reclaim your most potent life force energy you need to unlock the repression vault and allow the feelings that are trapped behind that door to be released and felt. Which in and of itself can be a very gnarly and intense process.
But it’s also a process of the liberation that comes from telling and FEELING the truth. And reconnecting with your innate potency, raw truth and inner fire.
So wherever Pluto lives in your chart is a place where you are going to be called to be radically honest about a deep wound that you are carrying. And may have been carrying for lifetimes.
And be invited to address this hurt place with self awareness and the utmost compassion. So you can be free to be fully yourself again.
