Here’s the deal. We need to calm the fuck down. I’m not suggesting going to sleep. Or trying to regain a sense of comfort by believing it’s possible to return to a past that was all a big delusion anyway.
But we need to put a lid on the hysteria. It doesn’t help anything to deny what’s happening. But it also doesn’t help to run around wringing our hands in a state of total panic that ultimately leads to giving up doing anything useful.
The current political situation is terrifying. And it completely sucks. But humans have been here before. This isn’t the first time an authoritarian fascistic regime has sucked all the freedom and justice and human decency out of the room and left the populace gasping.
And it has NEVER prevailed in the long run. There are ways to deal with this. Our ancestors have met this menace and have found ways to survive. And love. And laugh. And fight for everything worth fighting for.
Study the history of resistance and revolution. Look to those freedom fighters for wisdom and strategy and tactics. We need to align with our indigenous and black brothers and sisters who have been fighting this fight for a long time, to learn from them and to bow with great respect and humility to their many years and decades of experience.
We need to stay grounded in the reality of the situation. THIS IS HAPPENING. It’s actually been happening for a LONG time. It’s only now that those of us who have been privileged to be protected from seeing it are being impacted.
So it’s time to burn the fainting couches. Only clutch those pearls if you’re willing to tear them off your neck and sell them to free the children.
There’s no going back. There’s only going forward. There’s a lot of work to be done and it’s going to take ALL of us to create a world where justice is real. Equality is a given. Reverence and respect are the true coin of the realm. And community is a place where everyone belongs and is treated as the precious, holy, valued beings that we are all meant to be.
