Painting from the Wild Heart
in
Oaxaca, Mexico!

I love taking my students to magical places in the world to paint because I know how absolutely crucial the energy of a place is in supporting a powerful creative experience.

And most of those places are stunning natural environments like the red rock desert, the snow capped mountains or being immersed in giant redwood forests.

But there is a wonderfully magical city that I fell in love with a few years ago and that I always knew would provide an incredible container for creative transformation on all levels.

And that is the city of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Oaxaca is the embodiment of art and color and creative celebration. It is alive with spontaneous parades and indigenous inspiration.

Ancient cobblestone streets and buildings covered with incredible street art and painted wild colors.

Amazingly delicious local food, open air markets filled with textiles and masks and fantastically painted wooden animals.

Mariachi bands in the streets and joyously colorful festivals devoted to everything from saints to mole and a million different kinds of tequila.

It is a feast for the eyes and ears, nose and taste-buds, soul and heart. A combination of modern conveniences and timeless ethnic influences. There are automobiles in the streets next to donkeys carrying flowers and produce.

And one of MY favorite things… authentically unique folk art EVERYWHERE you look!

It is a true artist’s paradise and an unending source of creative inspiration. And we are going to make the most of it while we are there.

The art studio where we will be painting is located inside a gorgeous cafe/art gallery space called Art House Oaxaca that is owned and operated by one of my favorite creative soul sisters Lisa Sonora.

She and her partner/honey will also be making us fabulously delicious organic gourmet lunches every day as well as keeping us hydrated with plenty of bottled water, coffee and teas.

As in all of my retreats we will spend a LOT of time in the studio painting as well as nurturing our bodies with daily dance parties and building our community with sacred sharing circles.

• There will also be many opportunities during the week to wander around, explore the area, take in the art and just bask in the incredible energy of the city itself.
• do some shopping at the various open air markets and artist co-ops.
• treat yourself to a Temazcal Indigenous Steam Bath and Massage.
• take a field trip to a local Oaxaca village where the artisans make the famed and fantastical Oaxaca animals and where you will have the opportunity to paint one of your own.
