How To Talk To Your Muse

Creative Goddess
I had a conversation with one of my creative pals the other day and I was telling her about my lively and dynamic relationship with my inner muse, otherwise known to me as The Creativity Goddess.

My friend said that everyone talks about the inner critic as a separate voice in your head but she never thought about the muse as being alive in the same way.

So I thought it might be useful to other folks to be introduced to a process whereby you can get in touch with your OWN personal creative spirit.

My muse talks to me, guides me, cajoles me, inspires me and loves to boss me around. I rely upon her, argue with her at times and often resist her initially. And I can’t imagine what I would do without her.

I know on some level that she is a part of me. But she also feels very distinct, like she is very much her own self with her own sense of purpose and ideas. She is wickedly playful, a genius at creative problem solving and absolutely bold and fearless when it comes to choosing the next steps for me to take on my creative journey.

She believes in me more than I believe in myself and has total faith in me as an artist and a creative being. I trust her implicitly. Even though she also scares the bejesus out of me with her wild and outlandish suggestions for my creative expansion. She loves me fiercely without reservation and is only interested in my souls shining growth. Her hearts desire is for me to become more and more of the fully realized creative person I was always meant to be.

And I know that she is alive and well in each and every of us. And simply waiting for you to find her so that you can avail yourself of her creative juicy goodness, wisdom and vitality.

Since she ( or he … the muse can come in many forms) is most easily accessed through some kind of artistic expression, this prompt of muse discovery comes in two parts.

In the first step I want you to invite your muse into being through some visual medium.

You can either draw or paint her or create a collage from images torn out of magazines, etc. I don’t want you to think about this very much. Allow your muse to tell YOU who they are. You can take as long as you want during this process of discovery but you also can do it very quickly. A rough sketch is just fine, if you’re short on time.

In the next step I want you to place this visual image in a place where you can see it so that you can have a conversation with him or her.

And finally, I want you to actually talk with him or her. To ask your muse these questions and then write down the answers. Try not to second guess yourself. Simply write the first things you hear even if it’s not what you expect or doesn’t make any sense to your logical brain.

1.) What is your name? What do I call you?
2.) How can I best honor and nurture my relationship with you?
3.) How do I appear to you through your eyes? What do you see as my creative gifts and resources?
4.) What is it that you want most for me? What is your vision for me and my creative life?
5.) What is the next step I need to take in order to stay true to my creative path?

Congratulations! You have now made a connection with your greatest ally, your creative muse!

Take a moment to feel what it’s like to begin this exchange with She Who Only Wants What Is Best For You … and try not to worry about what others might think about you engaging in this form of dialogue. It’s all for a VERY good cause … which is your continued creative aliveness.

And never forget that your muse is always there and available to you. She truly wants to help. All you have to do is to remember to open the door.
