This is brilliant. I know this place so well. Thanks for so very bravely putting your process out in the open. It's universal and fabulous. No dragon can stand against that courage! Of course, they may decide that you're alpha, and you may find yourself with a dragon pack. How fun is that?

I love this! I was just thinking over the last couple of days of writing a post about a couple of my dragons--big, ugly, fire-breathing things that have scared the holy crap out of me for a really long time. And finally, prepared for battle with sharpened sword and shiny shield, I came up against them, ready to fight to the death if need be, and that's when I realized ... they're vegetarians. All this time, all this drama, all the fear ... I made it up. The threat was never really there. They're actually rather well-mannered, my dragons. Last night, they helped me roast my marshmallows when we had s'mores.

Can't wait to see what you've got cooking, sweetie. May your dragons help you along! :)

Hi Amy,

Thanks for the suggestions about the visual reminders. I have tried that in the past but my unconscious is so powerful that it doesn't take long before I no longer see the notes!!!

I also think that the process I am engaged in, while sometimes extremely uncomfortable, is actually incredibly fruitful. One thing I know for sure.... the muse... and the dragon... work in mysterious ways!

sorry cut off lol

This reminded me of you since the dragon seems to have more power when you're 'forgetting' your project. the visual reminders might help keep it weak. :)

I feel the same way! I have this thing that I am very jazzed about but can't seem to *start* it. Very frustrating. But I've been working through Havi's Dissolve Prorastination book and one thing I loved is using a visual reminder of the thing, or even littlenotes all over the house.se

Claire- Thanks for stopping by and cheering me on!

Tammy- I'm a big fan of dragons too. In fact, in Chinese astrology I AM a dragon, so I have a special fondness for them and actually love their power. However, when I'm writing I am not in charge of the symbols and metaphors that my muse chooses to use to clarify a concept. ( Sigh). So even though I like dragons very, very much she decided to make them the "bad guys" in service of this post. I just hope they will understand!!

Karen- Oh yes, distraction and running like hades... two of my VERY favorite tactics when dealing with the critic.

"the dragon wouldn't be so fired up unless I was really, really close to something wild and sweet and wonderful that will probably change my life in the best possible way." - Wow! So true!! I know this experience, and I sometimes fall into the dragon's fears too - love how you wrote about the process of awareness here. I'm leaving here with lots of questions about how I can walk around - or past - the dragon -- how I can either distract my judging mind or gently convince it that this ONE tiny step won't hurt - and then the next and the next steps...OR maybe holler, point to something behind it's back (so judging mind turns the other way) and run like hades...

Here's a thought: dragons in their snake form have long been symbols of women's power. Patriarchy has made dragons "scarey" and "bad." If, instead of seeing the dragon as preventing you from the shiney sparkly things, you choose to reacquaint yourself with her, you might find that she is, indeed, cheering you on - those big flames and all that smoke just her way of saying You Go Girl! I'm a big fan of dragons.
